Hill. ‘Lord Sheffield did not ask any of Mr. Stoddart’s team to take part in the opening match of the tour. All the same a splendid eleven went into the field. The Australians had the best of the match for the greater part of the three days … at the finish the draw was distinctly in favour of the Englishmen … The Australians however showed first rate form at every point, and gave clear proof of being a very strong side’ (Wisden).
