[ANDREA DE NERCIAT, Andre-Robert (1739-1800).] Les Aphrodites ou Fragmens thali-priapiques pour servir a l'histoire du plaisir. [Brussels: Poulet-Malassis and Lécrivain,] 1793-1864 [1864].
8 parts in 4 volumes, octavo (171 x 115 mm). Frontispiece by Félicien Rops and 8 engraved plates after Freudenberger. (Occasional light soiling.) Near contemporary maroon half morocco, spines lettered directly in gilt and with raised bands, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers (spines lightly and evenly faded). Provenance: Margoutaud (signature in vol. 2).
RARE POULET-MALASSIS EDITION of this masterpiece of 18th-century libertine literature; the first edition since the original of 1793, and one of only approximately 150 copies. Les Aphrodites is the archetypal libertine novel, mixing a lively narrative with superbly written dialogue for a menagerie of picaresque characters, and engravings of the highest quality. Hubert Juin has described Les Aphrodites as ‘decidedly the most diabolically well-tuned erotic machine that could be conceived’. Dutel A-93; Gay-Lemonnyer I, 242; Pia Enfer, 77.
