Details
Les Douze journées érotiques de Mayeux. Paris: 1830.

Small folio (195 x 135 mm). Lithographed throughout. 12 hand-coloured lithographed plates. (Title supplied in manuscript, lacking the frontispiece, light wear and short tears in some margins.) 20th-century red quarter leather, black morocco spine label. Provenance: RW (binding).

The fictional hunchback dwarf Mayeux, much like England’s John Bull, came to represent the national character and the silent majority of his nation. In the days following the July Revolution of 1830 this popular icon was embraced by countless artists and authors to comment on any number of social issues including, as here, sex and censorship. AE and ABPC record no copy offered at auction. WorldCat locates just one copy, at the Bibliothèque nationale de France: a defective copy with the title and two leaves of text supplied in facsimile. Dutel A-299; Gay-Lemonnyer II, 38; Pia Enfer, 388.
