The fictional hunchback dwarf Mayeux, much like England’s John Bull, came to represent the national character and the silent majority of his nation. In the days following the July Revolution of 1830 this popular icon was embraced by countless artists and authors to comment on any number of social issues including, as here, sex and censorship.
