Dark green textured binding by Kieffer, signed, spine with raised bands lettered directly in gilt, sides centred with a large ornament in gilt, mottled endpapers, top edge gilt, marbled slipcase. Provenance: Roger Braun (1863-1941; inscriptions from Haraucourt and Villa) – Lucien Tissot Dupont (label).
A UNIQUE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR AND RICHLY EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with Van Maele’s ‘Petite suite de Chambley’, original drawings and sketches by Georges Villa, and two suites of Villa prints inspired by this work, some hand-coloured, most initialled or signed. Haraucourt’s inscription reads, in French: ‘For Mr Roger Braun from the poet, who still does not blush for having written these verses, and proves it by signing them. Edmond Haraucourt. 1883 edition, second series, n. 46. For the Bibliophiles du Cornet’. This remarkable copy was evidently presented to Roger Braun, the great collector of books and posters, on the occasion of a dinner for the Bibliophiles du Cornet, a club founded by Braun and Villa in 1929. Villa inscribes his work for Braun in a number of places; for instance his watercolour original for one of the plates is inscribed, in French: ‘For Roger Braun, a sure and loving friend, with devotion, Georges Villa’. Dutel 444.
