MARTIN, Charles (18814-1934) -- Mascarades et Amusettes. Paris: à l'enseigne du nombril de Vénus [Marcel Valotaire, Jean Beauclair et Georges Cretté, 1933].
Oblong folio (308 x 415 mm). Engraved title and 12 colour plates by Charles Martin, and a duplicate monochrome suite. (Edges lightly yellowed, some plates with light spotting along the bottom edge.) Contemporary, possibly original vellum-backed boards, in sheets (extremities rubbed, some soiling).
FIRST EDITION, one of 63 copies only, this one number 29. A beautiful publication displaying Martin's characteristic playfulness and purity of line, and also showing a very pleasing contrast between the earthiness of the content and the remarkable elegance of the execution. Martin, one of the most distinctive Art Deco illustrators, contributed to Gazette du Bon Ton, Harper's Bazaar and many of the most luxurious publications of the age. Dutel 1937.
