Depicting a female bust with diamond earring, mounted on a glazed roundel with ebonised surround, inscribed 'ROMA 1794/ ...TAN... MONTI, FECE', within a later glazed giltwood case with velvet ground, the reverse inscribed with label 'By Gaetano Monti/ From the Collection of the Late J. H. Fitzhenry Esq./ sold at Christie's, lot 208/ 18th November 1913', the nose and hair restored

Lot Essay

Gaetano Monti (1750-1827) was a Milanese sculptor and wax modeller who was known for his highly detailed wax depictions of animals, as well as portraits of fashionable members of society, such as Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire, who he depicted in 1793 (E. J. Pyke, A Biographical Dictionary of Wax Modellers, Clarendon Press, 1973. p. 94).
