Lot Essay

Beer coasters were common in use in servants halls and taverns. A large bombard would sit on one end and tankards on the other. The casters enabled imbibers to pass the ale with ease from one end of a table to the other.
A pair of similar coasters were sold by Sotheby's, The W.J. Shepherd Collection of Treen, 30th November 1983, lot 601.
