Lot Essay

The present composition is a study for a large oil entitled, The Deserted Garden (circa 1909; Collection Lord Cowdray, see D. Hudson, op. cit., p. 93, pl. XV11). The Deserted Garden was one of eighteen paintings bought or commissioned by the first Lady Cowdray for the library in Dunecht House in Aberdeenshire between 1912 and 1922.
