Interleaved throughout the book on coloured silk ribbons and in the text on pages 229 and 252 are 30 ORIGINAL PEN AND INK WASH ILLUSTRATIONS which bear a sometimes striking resemblance to the work of Osbert Lancaster (1908-86). None, however, are signed, with the exception of one which bears the signature of Wilde's fictional artist "B. Hallward". By turns witty, exuberant and macabre, the illustrations exhibit a caricatural genius superbly adapted to Wilde's depiction of a corrupt fin de siècle world.
