Title printed in red and black surrounded by large ornamental woodcut border, full-page diagram of a world map and windroses, 4 woodcut double-page maps (world map, map of Venice, the Mediterranean and the Aegean), 4 smaller double-page maps (Sicily, Crete, Cyprus and Euboea), and 103 woodcut maps and plans throughout the text. (Title with large mainly marginal repair, touching title border, small parts of border supplied in facsimile, also small repair on title affecting 2 letters on verso, repair in lower margin of AA4 affecting text without loss, closed tear in BB1, long closed tear in P2 affecting text, one or two letters supplied in facsimile, upper corner of gathering F repaired, a few marginal repairs, light finger-soiling in margins.) Contemporary blind-stamped vellum (spine slightly wormed, partly torn away and starting to detach at head).
FIRST EDITION of Bordone's popular illustrated guide to the islands and peninsulas of the Western Ocean, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the Far East. The work is particularly notable for its wide scope, with the inclusion of recent discoveries in the Americas, for its well-known plan of the city of Mexico ('Temistitan') before its destruction by Cortez, and for its world map on an oval projection, cited as the first of its kind, perhaps attributable to Francesco Rosselli.
