Third edition of the first part, RARE FIRST EDITION of the second part. Cubero’s autobiographical account of his circumnavigation was first published in 1680. Ordained as a priest in Zaragoza, in 1671 the Propaganda fide appointed him as a missionary to Asia and the East Indies. He travelled extensively overland, visiting Moscow, Astrakhan, Armenia, and Persia before reaching Goa. From there, he travelled to Madras and then on to Malacca, where he was detained by the Dutch. Eventually freed, he sailed for Manilla, then Mexico, arriving back in Europe in 1679. The second part of this work 'largely concerns his adventures with the army in Europe, as well as describing the battle of Arsan and other notable events. Named Apostolic Confessor to the army of the Holy Roman Emperor, he served the Emperor against Turcs in Ungria, and was present at the blockade of Buda' (Howgego). Howgego C225; Palau 65758 & 65759 (calls for 342pp. but copy in Worldcat calls for 175pp., the same as our copy); Sabin 17821.
