HERBERT, William (1718-1795). A New Directory for the East Indies, with general and particular charts for the navigation of those seas: wherein the French Neptune Oriental has been chiefly consider'd and examined: with additions, corrections, and explanatory notes ... the second edition. London: printed for the editor, at the Golden Globe, under the Piazzas, London-Bridge, 1759. 4° (272 x 220mm). Title printed in red and black, errata slip pasted on blank verso of second dedication leaf, Qq2 folding with typographic table. Engraved frontispiece and 2 headpieces, wood-engraved ornamental headpiece and initials. (Front free endpaper, frontispiece and title detached, occasional light spotting and browning, mainly confined to margins). Contemporary panelled sheep, title lettered in gilt on upper cover within gilt fillet and dog-tooth roll (rubbed and scuffed, with small patches of abrasion and deep scratches to both covers). Provenance: John Clevland (1734-1817, booklabel).
VERY RARE ACCOMPANYING TEXT TO HERBERT'S DIRECTORY FOR THE NAVIGATION OF THE SEAS OF THE EAST INDIES. Herbert first published his atlas of sea charts based on French Neptune Oriental in 1758, with this second edition appearing the following year. Herbert travelled to India c.1748, as a purser's clerk aboard an East Indiaman. By the early 1750s he had established himself as a printer and seller of engravings, prints and charts on London Bridge. This copy belonged to John Clevland, son of the Secretary to the Admiralty, who had a long parliamentary and naval career, representing Barnstaple for over 40 years. He was also a director of Greenwich Hospital. Clevland's copy of the atlas which accompanies this text was sold at Christie's, 23 September 2004, lot 3.
