BRUNE, Johan de (1589-1658). Emblemata of Zinne-werck: voorghestelt. Amsterdam: Ian Evertsen Kloppenburch, 1624. 4° (230 x 170mm). Additional engraved title. 51 engraved emblems after A. van de Venne, woodcut initials and headpieces. (Upper corner of Z4 restored with loss of a few letters of top line of text on recto, closed clean tear in margins of 2E1 & 2E2, occasional light marginal thumb-soiling.) Black morocco gilt by H. Wood, sides with large foliate border, spines lettered in gilt and richly decorated gilt in compartments, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (new endpapers). Provenance: S.A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).

The fine designs for Brune's emblems are by Adrian van de Venne and engraved by the most talented engravers of the period: Willem van de Passe, Jan Gelle, Christoph Le Blon, Albert Poet, and Jan Swelinck. The engravings depict numerous interiors inhabited by figures in contemporary costume, many showing quaint scenes of daily 17th-century Dutch life. Landwehr Low Countries 86; Praz p. 288.
