Lot Essay

All four sizes of the écuelle 'ronde' had appeared in the sales records by 1753. The fourth size and smallest, which is not listed after 1775 cost from 24 livres to 60 livres with flowers while examples of the third size, painted with birds on a blue ground cost 240 livres. The width of the present lot does not correspond exactly with those suggested for sizes one to four of this form and it may therefore be an example of the smaller sized écuelles that are thought to have been produced from the 1760s.

François-Joseph Aloncle was a painter of birds, animals and landscapes active at Sèvres between 1758 and 1781.
