Lot Essay

A circular version of the present miniature, dated 'l'an XII', is in the Musée Calvet, Avignon and is described and illustrated in P. Lespinasse, La Miniature en France au XVIIIe siècle, Paris and Brussels, 1929, pl. XXXIII, no. 124, p. 194 (as a portrait of Barras). The year thirteen represents 1804/1805 of the French Revolutionary calendar.
