SHENDETANG ZHI MARKS IN IRON RED, DAOGUANG PERIOD (1821-1850)
The deep rounded sides are brightly enamelled with eighteen luohan with their various attributes engaging in various pursuits in a continuous landscape with a pavilion amid scrolling clouds on distant mountains.

Lot Essay

Bowls of this subject matter from the Daoguang period are rare. A nearly identical bowl of similar size with a Shendetang mark is in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, illustrated by He Li in Chinese Ceramics: A New Comprehensive Survey, New York, 1996, fig. 670.
