Lot Essay

This portrait of a young musician is a fine example of della Vecchia's imitations or pastiches of sixteenth century types derived from Giorgione, Titian, Lotto and Romanino, and can be compared with his Soldier with a plumed hat in the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg.
Della Vecchia developed a highly individual style that assimilated influences from Padovanino, under whom he studied, from the contrastingly Caravaggesque Carlo Saraceni, and from the Genoese born Bernardo Strozzi. The latter's influence is apparent in the lively brushwork and dense use of paint, most notably in the musician's slashed jacket.
