Lot Essay

Foaled in 1849 by The Baro' out of Pocahontas, Stockwell won the 1852 2,000 Guineas and the St. Leger. Retired to stud in 1853 he sired, amongst others, the Derby winners Blair Atholl, Lord Lyon and Doncaster, the St. Leger winners St. Albans, Caller Ou, The Marquis and Achievement; and the Oak's winner Regalia.
He died at Mr. R. C. Naylor's stud in Cheshire in 1870, and, by 1885, the aggregate winnings of his descendants was well over £100,000.
