The rectangular brush holder has two circular apertures and is set against a rectangular plaque which has shaped scrolling supports to the sides. It is painted to the front with a scholar and attendant, below an eagle on a branch on the screen. The reverse depicts the Immortal Kuixing modelled in high relief ; minor restoration.

Lot Essay

The scholar is probably about to take an examination and is depicted playing a flute, and the Immortal, Kuixing, the demon manifestation of the god of Literature, is shown running as he holds a brush and a scroll.
