Lot Essay

The large heads of this pair are distinctive and enable accurate dating, as example of the same form were found on the wreck of the Geldermalsen, a Dutch ship travelling back from Canton that sank in 1752.
A related example has been sold in the Henry Brown Collection, Sotheby's, London, 25 March 1941, lot 71.
