Lot Essay

One of the Dutch painter Cornelis Pronk's four official commissions for the Dutch East India Co. the original watercolor design survives in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. While the experiment in commissioned designs was shortly discontinued, dinner sets, tea pieces and large jars and covers were made in "The Doctors". See C.J.A. Jörg, Porcelain and the Dutch China Trade, pp. 99-101, and Howard & Ayers, op. cit., pp. 193-194.
