Lot Essay

A Pennsylvania native, self-taught artist Justin McCarthy found artistic inspiration in magazines and French Impressionist paintings. These sources are visible within Fashions in Egypt: his bold brushwork and swift graphite marks reveal his loose, expressionistic interpretation of Impressionism, while his subject matter reveals his inspiration from fashion magazines and popular journals such as National Geographic.
