Lot Essay

This drawing has in the past been attributed to Lucas van Uden (1595-1672), as it is similar in tonality and panoramic viewpoint to works by that artist. In the 1977 sale, it was catalogued as Gillis Neyts. Gustot (op. cit., pp. 259-60) compares the present sheet to a signed one by Neyts in Berlin - especially in the treatment of the leaves and trees (Gustot, op. cit., no. D245). Peter Schatborn also supports an attribution to Neyts.
