Property of a Gentleman Edward Bowyer Sparke (1832-1910) was the eldest surviving son of the Rev. John Henry Sparke, Chancellor of the Diocese of Ely and Canon of Ely Cathedral, by Agnes, youngest daughter of Sir Jacob Astley, Bart., M.P. of Melton Constable Hall, Norfolk. Born at Gunthorpe Hall, Norfolk, in 1832, he was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1872, he married Annie, second daughter of Lieut. Col. Marcon of Wallington Hall, Norfolk by whom he had a son and daughter. He was a Magistrate and Deputy Lieutenant for his county and was appointed High Sheriff in 1877. His elder brother, Lieut. Henry Astley Sparke, 4th Light Dragoons, was killed in the famous Light Cavalry Charge at Balaclava in 1854. A pupil of James Duffield Harding, whose influence is apparent in his work, he began to paint seriously around 1880 (the date of the majority of his work) in his studio at Gunthorpe, before embarking on various tours of Europe to sketch and paint. This collection of watercolours is by descent from the artist's family.
A large Quantity of Lithographs, after James Duffield Harding, the majority from Harding's Sketches from Abroad; and a quantity of other prints after W.H. Bartlett, E. Buckler, W.L. Leitch and others
