JOSEPH-BERNARD DE CHABERT DE COGOLIN (1724-1805)
Voyage fait par ordre du roi en 1750 et 1751, dans l'Amérique septentrionale, pour rectifier les cartes des côtes de l'Acadie, de l'Isle Royale & de l'Isle de Terre-Neuve; et pour en fixer les principaux points par des Observations astronomiques. Paris: l'Imprimerie Royale, 1753. 4º (258 x 190mm). Engraved title vignette, engraved headpiece by Gobin, 6 folding maps, one folding plate of geometrical figures, folding letterpress table. (Very occasional spots, Y4r slightly soiled.) Contemporary tan calf, sides with triple fillet border, gilt-panelled spine with red morocco label, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (covers lightly scuffed, corners bumped, spine worn at extremities). Provenance: ‘Chateau d’A….’ (faded ink stamp on title) – Lud. Ducis Blacacii de Alps (blindstamp on title).
FIRST EDITION. Chabert's work is in two parts, the first an abridgement of his journal accompanied by charts, the second devoted to his astronomical observations. 'It contained the most accurate hydrographic survey of the east coast that had yet been made, and the ministry of Marine subsidised publication by taking 200 copies for its own use' (DCB).
