Lot Essay

Leader's inscription of two dates on the painting indicate the date at which the painting was painted (1872), and also the date that he reworked certain areas, probably for the art dealer Arthur Tooth, about whom he wrote in his Records of paintings sold in May 1900: 'Working on an early picture for Tooth £5.00'.

We are grateful to Ruth Wood for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
