Li Yu, who was initially named Xianlü, was from Jinhua in Zhejiang province. His style name was Zhefan and pseudonym Liweng. He was a litterateur, dramatist, drama theorist, and esthetician. Li Yu proposed a relatively complete dramatic theory system and has been called the "Eastern Shakespeare".
