Lot Essay

Zhang Hanyue (1906-2005), who was originally named Zheng, was a councilman of the Suzhou Buddhist Association and an accomplished member of the Xiling Seal Engravers’ Society. Zhang Hanyue started learning to paint and cut seals when he was fifteen and received instruction from the famous artists Wu Changshuo and Zhang Daqian. As a Buddhist, he used the art of seal carving to promote the faith, which led him to make more than ten thousand seals. His works have been exhibited in the Tokyo Art Museum.
