Lot Essay

The subject of this painting is reminiscent of the name of the popular restaurant in the fashionable and affluent Upper East Side that Robert H. Ellsworth partly owned throughout the 1980s. Run by his partner Masahiro Hashiguchi, "The Gibbon" was the first to apply Japanese aesthetics to French cuisine successfully.
