Lot Essay

This album, painted around 1960, includes the three categories of landscape imagery explored by Shi Lu at this time, namely the scenery around the Yellow River, the topography of the northwest, especially Shaanxi, and bucolic pictures of the countryside. The studies of rustic peasants engaged in daily activities continue the practice of earlier decades when Shi Lu traveled extensively throughout northwestern China, usually with a sketchbook in hand.
