The shallow box with straight sides raised on three narrow cabriole legs, the slightly domed cover cast with four double bow-string bands centered by a flower head surmounted by a small loop handle, the bronze with milky greenish-blue patina

Two pottery vessels of this shape are illustrated in Zhongguo Wenwu Jinghua Daci Dian, Shanghai, 2002, p. 203, nos. 79 and 80, where they are dated Western Jin dynasty and described as ink stones with covers.
