Lot Essay

Each inscription is a poem expressing a wife’s longing for her husband, who is away.

Compare a similar sancai-glazed pillow, dated Jin-Yuan dynasty (1115-1368), illustrated by Tsugio Mikami in Sekai Toji Zenshu - 13 - Liao, Jin, Yuan, Tokyo, 1981, p. 243, no. 276, where the top is also divided into two sections within a foliate border and is inscribed with the same poem.
