AN EARLY AND IMPORTANT WORK ON THE ARABIC LANGUAGE
No VAT on hammer price or buyer's premium. AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF MEDIAEVAL SPANISH AND NORTH AFRICAN MANUSCRIPTS This collection comprises sixteen mediaeval works, the majority of which have been copied in muslim Spain with the addition of some north African examples. Ranging from the mid-11th century to the 15th century, they showcase the refinement reached by the Western Islamic culture of that period. These manuscripts copied in elegant andalusi maghribi script on high quality paper express the taste and interest of the learned society of the Taifas through to the Almohads, Merinids and Hafsids dynasties. This collection spans five centuries of Spanish and north African book-making and represents a rare opportunity to acquire fine copies of important Islamic texts.

Lot Essay

The paper used for this manuscript shows mould markings within the sheet and on top which indicates the use of a reed mould. This is a rare example of a medieval paper-making technique. Reed moulds were later replaced with glass moulds and later with wire moulds.
