Lot Essay
Ibn ‘Atiyya was born in Granada in AH 481/1088 AD. He later became a distinguished judge in Muria. The precise date of Ibn ‘Atiyya’s death is disputed, but it is thought to have been in the mid-twelfth century.
The present volume contains a commentary on the following suras: Qur'an XXXIV (sura saba), Qur'an XXXV (sura fatir), Qur'an XXXVI (sura Ya-Sin), Qur'an XXXVII (sura al-Saffat), Qur'an XXXVIII (sura Sad) and Qur'an XXXIX (sura al-Zumar).
Two other copies dated to the 12th century AD (volume I) and to the 14th century AD (volume I) are in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, A.J. Arberry, A Handlist of the Arabic Manuscripts, Dublin, 1956 & 1959, volumes II and IV, p.97, no. 3475 and p. 63 , no. 3929 respectively. One copy (OR 4748), undated, 15th century AD, is in the British Library, London, see C. F. Baker (editor), Subject-Guide to the Arabic Manuscripts in the British Library, London, 2001, A.13, p. 15.
