Lot Essay
This torso is from a Roman copy of an original, probably bronze, 4th Century B.C. Greek work by Lysippos - his 'Eros at Thespiai'. The young god is depicted stringing his bow, crouching slightly forward and reaching across his lower chest with his left arm to better wrangle with the weapon he grasps in his right. For complete Roman copies of this work, cf. Musei Capitolini, Rome, acc. no. 410 and Musée du Louvre, acc. no. MR 145.
