Lot Essay

Dupain studied under Alexandre Cabanel. From 1870 he would regularly exhibit in the Salon, and was awarded le Medaille a l' Exposition Universelles de 1880. It is likely the present work was painted around this time, when he focuses his attention to stylish figures strolling along the shore. The approaching figures quicken their pace leaving from the advancing waives behind; the wind catches in the finery of the elegant lady's dress while the excited whippets are stirred by the elements. All the factors merge to create a realistic sense of movement in this romantic scene.
