Lot Essay

R. Mayne, Channel Islands Silver, Oxford, 1985, p. 31, fig. 18, records a small group of known objects by this maker dating from c. 1677-1704, including two 'Guernsey-type christening cups, unusual fluting on bowl', comparable to the present example. Barbedor seems to have migrated to the Channel Islands from Paris after entering a mark in there in 1644. His greatest known work is the 'Dumaresq Punch bowl' of circa 1680 (sold Christie's London, 25 June 1975, lot 113).
