Lot Essay

Looking to Italian maiolica works for inspiration, Berlin began producing 'Majolika' wares of this variety in the 1860s and displayed examples at the 1862 International Exhibition in London. Compare the 16th century Urbino basin of this trefoil form at the J. Paul Getty Museum (86.DE.539).
