Lot Essay

It is interesting to note that one side of one vase is painted with a scene which imitates the early 18th century painting The Pine, Hawk and Glossy Ganoderma by the well-known Jesuit Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766). This painting is in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing and is illustrated in China: The Three Emperors, 1662-1795, London: Royal Academy, 2005, p. 183, no. 79.
