QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
Each plate is decorated to the central interior with four large ships and several smaller vessels flying Dutch flags and sailing into Cape Town harbour. Table Mountain, Devil's Peak and Signal Hill are depicted in the background. The scene is encircled by a gilt floral band.
9 in. (22.8 cm.) diam.
Further details
Cape Town was the midway resting point in the six month maritime journey between Europe and Canton and hence was a familiar sight to both Portuguese and Dutch traders. The Dutch fleet that took control of the territory in 1652 is depicted on the current plates. See Le Corbeiller, Patterns of Exchange, p. 84
