Lot Essay

Although previously thought to be by Heemskerck, the two series of motives in the present drawing are in fact copies after two drawings by the artist in the Heemskerck album in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (inv nr. 79 D 2; C. Hülsen und H. Egger, Die römischen Skizzenbücher von Marten van Heemskerck im Königlichen Kupferstichkabinett zu Berlin, I, fol. 21 and fol. 53).
