Lot Essay

In a letter dated 23 May 1969 to I.Q. van Regteren Altena, Carl van de Velde wrote that although the drawing is close in style to Frans Floris I he did not accept it as by him. An alternative attribution to the Master of the Prodigal Son (active 1530-1560) has been suggested.

We are grateful to Dr. Frans Laurentius for informing us that the paper dates from 1560-70.
