Lot Essay

Traditionally this drawing was attributed to Willem Schellinks (1627-1678) and later to Daniël Schellinks (1627-1701). Peter Schatborn has, however, suggested that this drawing is by Esselens, pointing out that the rendering of the trees in the foreground is especially typical of Esselens' work.

Laurens Schoemaker and Charles Dumas have suggested that the hatching in the trees may have been added by Aert Schouman (1710-1792).
