Lot Essay

In the 1976-77 exhibition catalogue, this drawing was compared to a drawing by Dujardin in the Dutuit collection in the Petit Palais, Paris (see P. Schatborn, Drawn to Warmth: Seventeenth-Century Dutch Artists in Italy, exhib. cat., Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, 2001, p. 157, fig. F). However, more recently, Peter Schatborn pointed out that the present drawing can also be compared to a Wooded Hill with a Castle in the Albertina, Vienna (P. Schatborn, op. cit., p. 160, fig. I). In particular the white areas in combination with contrasting wash are similar in handling.
