A Chinese Export Lacquer Games Box and Hinged Cover
Canton, China, late 18th - early 19th century
Of rectangular form, the top and sides decorated in gilt with cartouches depicting dignitaries, ladies and attendants on pavilion terraces, the interior fitted with four rectangular boxes and covers similarly decorated, and with eight shallow rectangular trays, the box supported on four carved dragon-headed feet

Lot Essay

This style of intricately decorated black and gilt Canton lacquerware was produced at the end of 18th century and continued to be exported to America and the West well into the late 19th century, as illustrated in the Chinese section at the Philadelphia Centennial International Exhibition in 1876 (see image).
