Each covered to the scrolled back, arms and seat with later brown buttoned leather, the downscrolled arm supports above an X-frame seat flanked by roundels, on downswept legs with brass caps and casters, stamped '1793' to the underside, restorations

Lot Essay

The design was popularised in J.C.Loudon's Encyclopeadia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture, 1839, fig. 1911. The chairs were intended to be 'covered in morocco leather, with button tufts; and they are very easy to sit upon'.
