Lot Essay

The sitter in the present lot may be Susanna Home, née Delane (d. 1790), the wife of the Irish painter and miniaturist, Robert Home (1752-1834). They were married in Dublin in 1783, and had four sons and a daughter. After his wife's death seven years later from consumption, Home moved to India, first to Lucknow and subsequently to Cawnpore, where he remained for the rest of his life. In 1795, he remarried.
