Details
A GEORGE II IRISH SILVER BASKET
MARK OF JOHN WILLIAMSON, DUBLIN, 1736
Oval with wickerwork sides, with overhead rope-twist cast handle, engraved with a coat-of-arms, marked underneath, further engraved with a scratchweight '69:5:0'
13 3/4 in. (35.5 cm.) wide
68 oz. 6 dwt. (2,125 gr.)
The arms are those of Synge with another, probably Curtis quartering another, both in pretence, almost certainly for Edward Synge, Bishop of Ferns and Leiglin, later Bishop of Elphin (1691-1762) and his wife Jane (d.1737), daughter of Robert Curtis of Roscora co. Tipperary. The bishop is recorded as having been a man of great hospitality and his daughter, his only surviving child, was regarded as a great heiress. She married the Rt. Hon. Joshua Cooper of Markree. Synge’s letters to his daughter were preserved in the archives of the Coopers of Markree and it is possible that this basket also descended in the family.
