Mei Qing was a leading figure of the Huangshan (Mount Huang) School of painting. Located in Anhui province, Huangshan is famous for its ever-changing views of mountain ranges that vary according to the times and weather conditions. Using simple and refined brushstrokes, Mei Qing depicted the jagged mountains dotted with old pines on the mountain tops, protruding out of the clouds. By employing a texturing method specifically to the clouds, the artist rendered different forms of clouds in a vivid way, pulling the viewer into a wonderland. Mei Qing inscribed a poem on the painting which can be translated as follows:
West a real natural barrier, peeping vastly at the falling sunrays.
A thousand peaks resemble swords, a water entwining and flying with a dragon.
Hammer out from the clouds, monks return from the cracks of the rock.
From where the evening breeze blows, vaguely hear the Sound.
Painted in 1695, Two Immortals on Huangshan is a late work by the artist at the age of 73.
