Lot Essay

In the latter part of his life, Solomon’s watercolours tend towards a mystical, dreamlike state. Here, a young man in a turban gazes into the distance, his features suggested rather than pinned down on the page. The rich tones of the sky behind threaten to engulf him, giving a sense of human isolation and insignificance.
